American photograph trained at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, Robert Mapplethorpe took his first photographs using a Polaroid. In the 70's, he photographed, using a wide-angle lens, his friends – artists, composers and other members of the New-York Underground. From the 80's, his photography moves towards the classical beauty and the refinement of subjects. His work concentrates on flowers' still lifes – orchids, tulips and lilies – statuesque nudes and portraits.
